THE FOUNDERS' STORY
The founders of Hope B.I.G. Ministries, Dr. Joseph and Catherine Lim, began a transformative journey alongside their two sons, Christopher and Alexander in 2020. Following the sale of their flourishing dental practice in Orange County, CA, the Lim family prayerfully made a life-changing decision to be trained as missionaries with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Kona, Big Island.
The initial plan for their outreach destination, Uganda/Philippines, shifted unexpectedly due to COVID-19 border closures. Instead, the Lims found themselves at the southern end of Big Island, where they witnessed the unseen struggles and hardship amid the apparent beauty of this "Paradise." The stark realities faced by the local youth and residents deeply moved them.
As their training progressed, a strong calling emerged — a calling to extend free mobile dental care and youth programs to the marginalized and isolated communities of the island. This vision was rooted in the desire to manifest God's love and instill hope for a better future. In response, they returned home to bid farewell to family and friends, sold their house and possessions, and permanently relocated to serve the underprivileged and remote communities of the Big Island and beyond.
Their mission is characterized by the spirit of Aloha (love), Manaʻolana (hope), and Lōkahi (unity), seeking to touch the lives of everyone they encounter.

Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is one of the largest international and interdenominational mission organizations in the world. It has 1,200 mission bases and training facilities in 180+ nations with over 20,000 full time missionaries. Three main categories of YWAM's many ministries are evangelism, training, and mercy ministry.
Most of our Hope B.I.G. ministries leaders and staff members are missionaries trained through Discipleship Training School (DTS) at YWAM and have huge, compassionate hearts for the local ministry work for the people of all ages in need.
Our Hope B.I.G. Ministries operates under the umbrella of YWAM Ships Kona where Catherine is a staff member and a ministry leader and helps with mission base planning. YWAM Ships Kona's focus is reaching the isolated and remote Pacific Islands with healthcare and the gospel.
Besides running Hope B.I.G. Ministries as a director, Catherine also staffs with Holoholo Ministries, which is also under the umbrella of YWAM Ships Kona, that focuses mainly on local ministries serving the underprivileged children, at-risk youth and disabled residents in Kona area. She also leads prayer and intercession at Holoholo.
The amazing staff members of Holoholo Ministries will be a big part of our community work in remote and isolated areas of the Big Island as we work together hand in hand.
